Chapter 9

ARIANA

My roommate frowns as she shakes her head. The foul mood won’t leave me no matter what I do. Atargus said that we’d escape, but he’s not here. The masters keep a close eye on us, even to the point that we can’t speak out of line without them hearing and knowing that we are up to something. Where is he?

Minbi utters something. I shake my head as I stare at her. She points to my mouth and then to hers. She frowns and then smiles. Oh, she’s trying to get me to smile.

“I wish you could understand me,” I say as I sit on the hay bed. She’s nice, I think. She seems to always be concerned about my mood. At least, that’s what I think.

“I might as well talk gibberish, for all you can understand,” I say.

She shakes her head and says something. I shake my head. Dammit. I wish my implant could understand the Fura language.

I point to my heart. “Mate. Atargus, igombeis,” I say. Then I point outside and frown.

She nods as if she understands. “Bevit.”

Whatever Bevit means. I shrug. “I want him. I miss him. I saw him today. He said we’d escape tonight, but where is he?”

Minbi leaves and comes back a few minutes later. She’s nodding frantically and pointing out the window.

I look through the silvery light cast by the moons. Ice planets brighten at night with any light, be it from a moon or from their version of northern lights. I see nothing else but the silvery light and the deep shadows. No Atargus. Shaking my head, I smile at my friend.

“Nice night,” I utter.

She keeps looking out the window. We have no lights in the rooms. When the sun sets, we normally go to sleep. Tonight I’m not able to sleep because of what Atargus said to me earlier. We’re supposed to escape. I no longer can leave my room. Although with Minbi in here with me, they don’t lock it until later. Click. The lock is suddenly secured. Minbi smiles and shakes her head. I resign myself to the hay bed where I sit.

Minbi sits too, staring at me and looking out the little porthole window. I lie down, my eyelids growing heavy. She talks quickly. I glance at her.

“What?”

Her language sounds like gibberish to me. I finally relent and sit up, which makes her happy. She points toward the window. I look out and see nothing. “What’s out there?”

She points to my heart.

“Atargus?”

She nods. My heart lurches. Maybe! I squint as I look through the shadows and see nothing. Time continues to move on. The night feels long and cold and I shiver as I settle back under the woven blanket. At least I’m comfortable when I’m warm. Minbi finally lies back too. Maybe I’ll see Atargus again tomorrow and can find out when he plans to escape. Sweet sleep evades me, though. I rise up again, Minbi’s back is to me, and she’s snoring softly. So much for her vigil.
